Born and raised in a small town in the former GDR, Bernd Weingart has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1990s. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious North Rhine-Westphalia Photography Prize.
The exploration of his own inner world in reflection on visible things, alongside an intensive examination of the history of art, form the starting points of his work. A multitude of experiences and fascinating observations from childhood form the transparent background to this basis.
In the 2010s, Weingart devoted himself intensively to night photography. The resulting works from the Nocturnes series document the sublime atmosphere of nocturnal urban landscapes, which he reads as signs of laws and ideas. At the beginning of the noughties, he visited the seclusion and silence of his childhood Landscape on a regular basis. Here he focusses on the recurring experience of a feeling that he calls numinos. In the Whispering Gallery series, Weingart visualises the environments of a declining world of the 1980s and, beyond that, the life of an isolated bohemian society that asserts its existence in the provinces.
He is currently working experimentally on the visualisation of primary thought figures from hermetic writings.
